Jan. 20, 2022

On Jan. 19, a map proposed by Republican state Rep. Dan Shaul passed the state House and headed to the Senate. The proposal closely resembles the current map, with six Republican-leaning sweats to two Democratic-leaning seats.

The passage marks a defeat for conservative Republicans in the House who were unhappy with the map and had proposed an amendment that would create a 7-1 Republican map by dismantling the Democratic-held 5th District around Kansas City.

What’s more, while the suburban St. Louis 2nd District would get a few points redder, it remains somewhat competitive even though it could easily have become solid red by taking in neighboring, more conservative precincts.
